I borrowed a copy of Ilona AndrewsSanctuary through Hoopla.

It’s not easy serving the Chernobog, the God of Destruction, Darkness and Death…especially during the holidays; and especially when you’re out of eggnog and one of your pesky, freeloading mythic creatures has eaten your last cookie.

Roman would like nothing more than to be left alone, but when a wounded boy stumbles into his yard and begs for sanctuary, Roman takes him in. Now elite mercenaries are camped out on his property, combat mages are dousing the house with fire, and strange priests are unleashing arcane magic. They thought Roman was easy pickings, just a hermit in the woods, but they chose the wrong dark priest to annoy. For while Roman might be patient, he is the Black Volhv, filled with the love of his terrible god. For his adversaries, it’s a fight to the death, but for him, it’s just another day in the neighborhood.

my review

The Kate Daniels series is one of those that I wish I could come to new and read for the first time. I enjoyed it a lot, and Roman has always been a favorite side character. So, I was thrilled to discover that he was getting a book of his own book.

It’s only a novella. So, the plot isn’t deep or convoluted. But Sanctuary is full of all Roman’s customary piss and vinegar. He is his characteristic sarcastic self, brooding and bemoaning his god’s love. There’s a whole menagerie of cute critters and a bit of holiday cheer (or lack thereof). All in all, I hope there is more to this spinoff series.

Book Review: Sweep With Me, by Ilona Andrews

I purchased a copy of Ilona AndrewsSweep With Me. And here I have a short review for a short book.

Thank you for joining us at Gertrude Hunt, the nicest Bed and Breakfast in Red Deer, Texas, during the Treaty Stay. As you know, we are honor-bound to accept all guests during this oldest of innkeeper holidays and we are expecting a dangerous guest. Or several. But have no fear. Your safety and comfort is our first priority. The inn and your hosts, Dina Demille and Sean Evans, will defend you at all costs. [But we hope we don’t have to.]

Every winter, Innkeepers look forward to celebrating their own special holiday, which commemorates the ancient treaty that united the very first Inns and established the rules that protect them, their intergalactic guests, and the very unaware/oblivious people of [planet] Earth. By tradition, the Innkeepers welcomed three guests: a warrior, a sage, and a pilgrim, but during the holiday, Innkeepers must open their doors to anyone who seeks lodging. Anyone.

All Dina hopes is that the guests conduct themselves in a polite manner. But what’s a holiday without at least one disaster?

my review
This was another entertaining installment in the Innkeeper Chronicles. I feel like this one may have had less meat to it than some of the past books. Dina and Sean spend very little time together, which feels like a missed opportunity since this is where he joins her as an innkeeper. Plus, an awful lot of the page space (in this already short book) is dedicated to describing odd aliens and/or decor. But it was still fun to catch up with the Gertrude Hunt crew. I look forward to more in the future.
