The Unleashing

Book Review of The Unleashing, by Shelly Laurenston

The UnleashingI received an ecopy of The Unleashing, by Shelly Laurenston from Netgalley.

Review:

INTERESTING CHARACTERS SEEKING PLOT TO PERFORM IN
Must be action packed and accepting of humour, violence and dogs.

This book is a mess. It has so much potential though. The idea is interesting. The characters, though shallow and undeveloped, are funny. The world, though inconsistent, could support a series. The first chapter sets the book on the right path, even if it does deviate immediately. There is material here to make something great.

Despite all of this, the book is a dud. Why? Because the closest thing it has to a plot, beyond ‘hey, here is a woman and here are a lot of volatile, hostile, RANDOM people she meets one day,’ comes out at 88% and is only introduced before the book ends on a cliffhanger. In other words, this whole 400-page book is essentially a prologue and not even a very good one.

In the introduction, the author states

…The first book in my new series, Call of the Crows, and right off the bad, I want you to understand that this is not a rewrite of an old book nor is it a fleshing out of an old book. The Unleashing is a brand-new book and series, with brand-new characters, brand-new locale, and brand-new trouble. Although my book Hunting Season, which has been out since 2005, was the start of this idea…The Unleashing is me taking the whole thing to the next level, and it’s a definite stand-alone.

I mention this because I think the author doth protest too much and, though she may believe it, I don’t. Or rather, either this book does depend on the previous book to support this book’s world-building or this book’s world-building isn’t very well developed.

Here is an example. At one point two Crows are discussing their wings. One (Annalisa) states it took her wing 6 months to come out. The second (Maeve) said her’s took a year. Kera has been with the Crows 2 or 3 days, but someone decides her wings need to come out now. So, she arranges for the man Kera likes to accidentally walk in on her without a shirt on, somehow thereby forcing the wings to emerge.

But I sat there wondering how that worked. If one character waited 6 months and another a year, then is there something biological that needs to be waited on to develop wings? If not, if it’s just the odd hunching movement a woman would make to cover her breasts when walked in on that forces ones’ wings out, then why would other characters wait so long instead of just being taught how to get their wings? It makes no sense and isn’t explained at all. I mean this in the sense that the author doesn’t even try to explain it and as a reader I had no idea why or how a Crow’s wings come into existence. I was left wondering if it’s explained in The Hunting. I wondered this on several occasions.

This lack of teaching was a constant irritant to me. I understood that the Crows were supposed to be wildcards that didn’t do well with too much structure. But how is a 1,300-year-old institution supposed to survive if newcomers are treated with such open hostility, told NOTHING about their situation and literally expected to be able to fly without a word of instruction? (Especially when also being told repeatedly, “You can always trust a fellow Crow.” Um, pretty sure I saw no evidence of that.) It felt very much like all of the slapstick results of Kera’s lack of appropriate mentoring were only there for the laugh. Like, “Oh, look a topless woman is having a cat fight. Ha, ha, ha…” (And this after she already kicked some serious ass while naked.) Meh.

The book also starts with Kera waking up and being an awesome asskicker. I had such high hopes for the book at this point. That asskicker doesn’t show back up until around 85%. The whole rest of the time Kera just wonders around meeting random, vapid Crows more concerned with the thickness of Kera’s thighs than fighting, doing completely random things and falling gracelessly in love with Vig. And while there was a lot of humour in these women’s shallow comments and ridiculous antics, it’s all POINTLESS and often over played.

It was kind of like seeing Kera join a homicidal sorority (of the Legally Blond variety). And with the Ravens having conversations like this:

“Is pussy really worth what you’re about to do?” the Raven leader asked.
Vig’s brow furrowed as he immediately replied, “Yes, it is.”
“He’s right,” Stieg agreed. “It is.”
“Totally worth it, dude.”
“He’s right, bruh. It’s absolutely worth it.”
“I can’t believe you’re actually asking the question.”

the Raven’s feel disturbingly like a gang of marauding frat boys. (And you’re guess is as good as mine about how many people are involved in that discussion. It’s no clearer in context than in a floating quote.)

Then there is Vig, the love interest de jur and another inconsistent character. He’s said to be scary and dangerous. But we’re shown a quiet, introverted, nice guy. Don’t get me wrong, I liked him. He’s cute. But despite everyone saying how frightening he is, no one, not one single person, shows any fear of him and not once does he do anything to support this assertion.

There are also about a million faceless Crows. You are constantly meeting new ones and losing track of others. And in this endless flow of Crows you get a barrage of wealthy, successful, famous people. After a while it became cheesy (and not the good kind), as if each new famous face is only there for the effect instead of any importance.

All in all, I found this a weak, plotless Urban Fantasy that leans far too heavily on its attempt to be sharp and witty. Its effort is too apparent. It’s trying too damned hard and therefore fails miserably. The writing itself is fine (except for the constant head-hopping), the editing passed muster, and I appreciated having a POC as a main character (as well as most of the female side characters) but I have no desire at all to continue the series.

A note on the cover: I have to ask, considering the book is about a woman (Kera) as she joins and adjusts to an all female fighting unit, why is there a man on the cover? I assume it’s mean to be Vig, but he’s not the main character, so why does he get to be on the cover? It seems to be putting the emphasis on the wrong character.

Book Review of Misfits, by Garrett Leigh

Cass Pearson is a troubled soul. He loves Tom with all he has, but some days it feels like he hasn’t much to give. Jake seems like the perfect solution. Cass risks everything to push Jake and Tom together, but Jake resists, wary, until the darkness of Cass’s past comes to call. Then Jake finds himself the last man standing, and it’s time to dig deep and shine a light for the men he’s grown to love.

Review:   (slightly Spoilerish)
This is one of those novels I finished feeling quite conflicted about. It’s well written and, without a doubt, it’s very sweet, with relatively low angst and some satisfying sex scenes. So, in terms of feel good factor it scores high. But it fell perilously close to a ‘let’s all learn to accept and understand people with turrets syndrom’ PSA (it starts in with the TS infodrop/lecture conversations very early on) and it’s so far out in fantasy la-la land that I couldn’t at all relate to the characters or their situation.

It’s not that I have any problem accepting the idea of a stable, loving three-way relationship. I don’t and here again, it’s a very very sweet one. But these three men are each painfully earnest Marty Stues who (with the exception of Cass’ single issue) all openly communicate and revel in their mutual sacrifice and worship of one another.

Tom and Cass have been together for a decade and not once do either of them worry that bringing a third into it (the relationship, not just the sex) for the first, and presumably only time will disrupt the balance in any way. Not once does anyone get jealous of diverted attention. Not once is anyone embarrassed as they get to know each other, even with all Jake’s tics. Not once does Jake really balk at the idea of it all. It’s all just far too easy to be believable. There simply isn’t any struggle or apparent adjusting.

It also felt skewed. Eventually, the three men were meant to have settled into an equal relationship, but this is compromised by the unequal time given to each one’s POV. We get almost nothing from Cass and roughly twice as much from Tom as Jake. To me, it left Cass feeling like little more than the object Tom decides to magnanimously share with Jake, even though that’s not how it’s meant to read.

I was also a little put off by how much of the whole thing was only possible because Tom and Cass had the finances to make it so. Despite Tom being 30 and Cass 28, they are successful businessmen and restaurateurs. Tom could afford to hire Jake on a whim, allowing them to get to know each other. Tom and Cass could afford to own several properties in and around LONDON, allowing the space and time apart needed. They could afford to provide each employee a free meal everyday and open food banks and soup kitchens to feed the homeless, proving (repeatedly, like mallet to the mind) what good guys they are. They could afford to allow an unknown young man decision-making control of a new business and even to eventually give him the million dollarish (as they had to buy a building in London, hire architects to design it, builders to remodel it, interior decorators, and advertising companies. Then they had to incorporate, purchase restaurant equipment, furnishings, dishware, product, etc. Each was mentioned and it adds up) business to ensure he feels secure in their less than a year old, unconventional relationship. Sure, it’s sweet (’cause wouldn’t want to forget what good men they are) but how realistic is any of that?

All in all, it was a sweet read, especially seeing Cass and Jake get to know one another, and I enjoyed that aspect of it, but I would have enjoyed the book a bit more if it had been a little less removed from reality.

Book Review of Living Dead Girl & Stalking Dead (The Vampire Hunter #1-2), by S. C. Reynolds

I picked up S. C. Reynolds’ Living Dead Girl and Stalking Dead (book 1 & 2 of The Vampire Hunter series) from the Amazon free list. I believe the whole series is perma-free. (At least it was still free at the time of posting these reviews, a year after originally downloading.)

As Aurora struggles with her new un-dead body, she must make a decision between the boy next door and the vampire who has nothing to lose. And time is running out – plagued by blackouts she can’t control, Aurora knows her days may be numbered. She was brought back for something epic, but will she get the chance to find out what?

Review:
Run, run away as fast as you can. You want nothing to do with this book. It’s horrible. The main character is a shallow, mindless, boy obsessed nitwit that is so uninteresting I barely managed to finish the book. If this had been the only problem I had with the book I probably would have shrugged it off as a weak YA, but it’s not.

This book is flat…I mean FLAT. There is no emotional resonance or peak anywhere in it. Example: Aurora has just mysteriously risen from the grave. Does she freak out? Search for a reason? Show any evidence that she’s been dead? Nope, she gets upset that the boy she liked is now dating her friend. A frightening vampire kidnaps her and informs her that he’d been told to kill her. Does she get mad or frightened? Nope, she worries about what to wear. She is told that her vampire friend was an admitted killer at one time. Does she get nervous? Nope, she’s mad he didn’t kiss her. A werewolf attacks and almost kills her. Does she get the shakes and go into shock? Nope, she has a makeup session.

There is just nothing realistic about Aurora’s rising from the dead. Even down to the rising. Look at the cover of the book. See that dirty, grime incrusted hand? Yeah, she’s supposed to have dug her way out of the grave. But when she gets to Henry’s house, she and her pretty pale pink dress are clean. So clean, in fact, that she even chooses to wear it again. How did she manage that?

Time passes that isn’t accounted for. Aurora pulls the cliché TSTL storm-out-and-get-lost-and-endangered shtick when angry. She makes no effort to figure out what happened to her, even when it’s obvious that people around her have the information. Assumptions are made and treated as fact (that she’s a living dead girl, as opposed to a vampire, zombie, etc) based on nothing. The same belief is shared by several people with no sharing of information. She managed to go clothes shopping despite being dead for a year and having no discernible source of income or credit. She’s supposed to be hiding in someone’s house for several weeks without them noticing. People get stumbling, hiccuping drunk on three beers and seventeen year olds somehow manage to go on quick beer runs. The younger sister is horribly slut-shamed because her skirt is too short. There is the start of a love triangle. The book is from Aurora’s 1st person POV for 25 chapters and then we randomly get a chapter from someone else’s POV, before going back to her. (It’s jarring.) The editing needs attention and the author uses ridiculous, contrived occurrences to artificially drag out reveals.

Basically, I found very little to enjoy here. I’ll admit that the writing was fine, but the story is undeveloped, lacklustre and a time-waster. However, I read it because I’m doing a reading challenge in which the second book in this series factors, so I’m committed to at least the next book in the series before I can pretend I never read it. *sigh* I will persevere.

Stalking DeadDescription from Goodreads:
In the second installment of The Vampire Hunter series, Aurora finds herself getting dangerously close to Lucas, the sexy vampire who was hired to send her back to the grave. As Lucas fights his own attraction to Aurora, he can’t bring himself to follow through on his orders to kill her. Instead, he tries to help Aurora and her best friend Henry solve the mystery behind her resurrection. They dig up her grave to find out what item of hers was placed there when she was brought back to life.

As it becomes increasingly obvious that Henry thinks of Aurora as more than a friend, she is torn between the two guys. As much as she is drawn to the mysterious Lucas, she is also deeply attracted to Henry. But deciding what she wants will have to wait – when Lucas didn’t follow orders, someone else was hired to do the job. And the new hunters on the scene have a history with Lucas. They would like nothing more than to kill Lucas and send Aurora back to her grave – permanently.

Review:
Soooo, yeah….this wasn’t an improvement on the first book. Nope, still annoyed me at almost every turn. I still found Aurora to be a vapid, useless, unpleasant heroine. I still found the love triangle contrived and infuriating. I still found both heroes substanceless.

The main problem I seem to have with this series is that a girl rose from the dead. She’s being hunted by supernatural assassins. “Agencies” (don’t ask me what that means or entails) all over the world know about her “case” (don’t ask what constitutes a case). She has a mysterious medium who pops up with timely advice on occasion and a vampire lusting after her (and vice versa) but the book is essentially dedicated to a weak love triangle, Henry’s basketball practice and whether his father is having an affair or not.

Seriously, given everything that’s supposedly going on, I don’t really care about her adolescent obsession over who she has or hasn’t kissed (even as YA). I sure don’t care who his father may or may not be kissing. And the whole, ‘he might be having sex with a man, thus his whole life and marriage must be a lie, since he obviously can’t also be attracted to women’ instant assumption is insulting to the extreme. Talk about jumping to conclusions and making simplistic judgements. Ugh.

Aurora never presses on important points. People all around her have information she should want. I mean, how she died is worth pressing for.  But she never does. She just lets it all slide. Useless!

I have the rest of the series and if reading it wasn’t so painful, I might be interested in knowing the cause of the ‘living dead girl.’ But I just can’t face any more of the dull, flat recitation of daily events.
